Math A large part of the way children learn math in Kindergarten is through hands-on experiential learning. A lot of our math time is devoted to math stations, with guided instruction in small groups. Children also have math choice time where they work at independent stations of their choosing. By playing games (such as Uno,Top It, and Sum Swamp), children are engaged in their mathematical thinking and enjoy making their own choices during this time.
Language Arts and Literacy A large focus of our time in Kindergarten is focusing on the sounds of letters and putting those sounds together. We do this in many different ways- during Whole Group instruction as well as in small groups during Literacy Centers and Guided Reading times. We also focus on rhyming words, word families, phonemic segmenting and phonemic blending of sounds. During our literacy times, we also read many fiction and non-fiction books, asking questions and making predictions.
