We have had a fabulous first week of 2nd Grade. Together, we are learning about each other as a classroom community of learners and as individuals. We are working hard to learn the routines in the classroom, as explicit practice and expectations will set the tone for the rest of the year!
We have also begun Reader's Workshop where the 2nd Grader's stamina has already soared to 14 minutes of uninterrupted reading. The students are completing their reading log each time they read and we have discussed the importance of doing this in a clear and neat manner. We're also beginning an author study about Kevin Henkes and noticing his style of writing, the common characters that he writes about, and why he might choose to write the stories that he does.
We also created our Maps of the Heart to help us find topics about which to write. We read Pancakes for Breakfast by Tomie DePaola to help us understand how a small idea can turn into a fabulous story! I look forward to sharing the progress of these stories with you soon!
During math, we are starting the year by focusing on doubles facts. We are playing dice games (and reviewing the expected behavior for rolling the dice), identifying vocabulary words such as "addends", "sum" and "difference" and explaining our thinking as we notice patterns within our math work.
We have also started our work on the calendar. The 2nd Graders learned the "knuckle trick" to know how many days there are in each month and we started working on our January page of our calendar.
I feel so fortunate to have all your children in our class this year. They are caring and kind learners who are excited for our year ahead! Mrs. Judy Smith-Prather joined us this week as an additional teacher in our classroom. She brings to our class many years of teaching, warmth, and support and the children have embraced her with loving arms!
I am looking forward to seeing you next Thursday, 9/12 for Curriculum Night from 7:00-7:30. Please remember that this is an adult-only evening.
