Some highlights of our week are as follows:
** The 2nd Graders started learning about place value during math.  We reviewed the concepts that were introduced last year (such as the tens and ones place) and are now focusing on the 100's place. We played the game "thunk, whoosh, pop" to identify numbers.  We continued math stations, where children also enjoyed playing "Make 10", as well as working in small groups during this time.

** During science, the 2nd Grade geologists were excited to go outside to make their own rock collections.  (Thank you for sending in rain gear- of course, because we had it, it didn't rain!).  When we came inside, the students identified the properties of the school yard rocks and, as suggested by the children, we washed them to see if the color would change as they did with the other rocks we observed.

** We are continuing to read every day and are focusing on monitoring for meaning as we read. The 2nd Graders are enjoying sharing the strategies that they are using for unfamiliar words and recommending new books to each other.

** We are continuing with our narrative writing, focusing on writing the way that Amy Hest does. I have encouraged the 2nd Graders to go back into their writing and to focus on one part of their story and add as many details as they can. Writing continues to be a work in progress for all.

Questions to ask your 2nd Grader:
1.  How many hundreds, tens and ones in the number "765"?

2.  What were some things you thought about for your "Figure Me Out" Activity?

3. What book are you reading during Reader's Workshop?  What do you think will happen next in your book?

4.  Where did you find your school yard rocks? What were some properties that you observed?

5.  How are reading and writing connected?
