We had a very busy week in Room 5! The highlight of the week for many was beginning our science unit of rocks and pebbles. The 2nd Graders received science journals where we first received the expectations of a science journal and how to show an ABCD drawing. We went outside and collected leaves. Then, the students were asked to draw and show that leaf with an Accurace, Big, Colorful, and Detailed drawing. Yesterday, the 2nd Graders (who are now also geologists!) had the chance to compare 3 different types of rocks, and then to rub the rocks together. I introduced words such as "properties", "weathering" and data" which were then added to our word wall. Next week, we will see what happens when rocks get wet.
Gabriel joined us this week for 2 sessions of Mindfulness. Gabriel's work is possible because of an WPSF grant. Gabriel's calm voice and clear instructions helped our class be aware of our bodies using a chime and teaching us about our anchor spots within our bodies. He will continue to join us on Mondays.
For math, we continued to focus on the friendly number of 10 as we look at addition and subtraction equations. The 2nd Graders were busy during math stations and also enjoyed using Marcy Cook tiles to help differentiate each child's experience and assuring that each child gets what they need. Furthermore, the 2nd Grader learned 2 new math games this week, reviewing addends, sums, and strategies for quick addition.
During writing, we are continuing to work on our personal narratives. After reading books by Amy Hest, such as Ruby's Storm , we focused on the importance of details when helping the reader visualize the small moment that is being described. Reading and writing are very close connected and this is an important theme we will be focusing on all year long.
I look forward to sharing your child's work with at Parent-Teacher conferences which begin next week.:-)
A few questions to ask your 2nd Grader:
* What is a "mindful moment"?
* What was added to the playground this week?
* Who was your partner this week when you played "Four Sums In A Row"? Did you use any specific strategies to block your opponent?
* . What is a "geologist"?
* . What is a "Double D"? What kind of behavior is just annoying?
