The students are continuing to work very hard in class.  Currently, during math we are focusing on addends to 10 and understanding how a number bond helps us to figure out the missing number in an addition or subtraction.  Today we also began to review the "greater than" and "less than" symbol to complete a math expression.  You will see your child work on these expressions next week for homework.   We just began Math Stations this week where students are working at differentiated math stations based on their mathematical needs. Ms. Lepow also joined us this week and supported the class during our math station time.

We just completed our author study of Kevin Henkes.  We have started to compare and contrast his many books based on character, setting, problems presented and how problems were solved.  The students really enjoyed the common characters among all the books by Kevin Henkes and the style of writing that we noticed being used in each of his books.

We accomplished our goal of sustaining our reading for 20 minutes this week! During our mini lessons, students are learning the importance of re-reading a book (taking the time to notice word patterns, and nuances in the story) and how to make sure that their book is a "just right book". We are taking the concepts learned during Fundations and transferring them to our reading time- noticing parts of speech, digraphs, and spelling patterns.  Likewise, the 2nd Graders are working on their narrative writing- taking a simple story and making sure to tell it with as much detail to excite the reader. I have modeled this by sharing my personal narrative about taking my dog, Summit, for a walk where he ran after a fox!

Here are some questions to ask your 2nd Grader about their week:
  • Can you tell me all the combinations of 10?
  • What did we do during Open Circle this week?
  • What did you enjoy about Math Stations this week?
  • What does the term "visualization" mean? What was the poem about that we read this week?
