We started the day today with our normal routines (morning activities and morning meetings) and participated in the ALICE drill. The class went out of the room quickly and then ran to the opposite side of the field, as we practiced yesterday. As we came back in, children were complaining that they were cold, but this "complaint" seemed to be the only reaction to the drill. We resumed our day with some fabulous Shares (including our Star of The Week, Sophia, sharing about her medal from climbing The Great Wall of China!) and then had poetry. We learned the new sight word the and then sat around our "campfire" and sang "Albuquerque Turkey".
After recess we finished our Literacy Centers which means that every child now has a new book in their book bin and has learned the new reading strategy of Lips the Fish- ask your child what Lips the Fish helps us to do!
During math, we learned about the Greater Than/Less Than symbol and used goldfish, dice, and paper to create an alligator who is eating more goldfish in one pond than the other. We will continue to practice using this symbol , as it can be understandably difficult to remember which direction means greater than or less than.
We ended our day with our Mystery Reader. Thank you to Sybil Williams for coming in and reading a fabulous fiction story about a Lighting Bug and then gathering the group for an imprompu reading of Mr. Nosey. It was a great way to end our day!
