We started our morning with a science experiment where I made an snowflakes out of pipe cleaners. We then put the pipe cleaner in a solution of borax and hot water. We made predictions of what might happen. After waiting 5 hours(!!), we noticed that the icicle had "frost" on it due to the chemical reaction of the borax and the water. On Monday, the Kindergarteners will make snowflakes and we will perform the experiment another time
We began a new author study this morning. Jan Brett, who is one of my favorite authors and illustrators, has written many winter-themed books. We read The Mitten this morning and noticed how well her words match her pictures and how her borders even give a prediction about what's going to happen on the next page! We will continue reading these books throughout the month.
During math, we talked about the terms "longer" and "shorter". The children then walked around the classroom finding objects that were taller or shorter than they are. We had a group discussion at the end about our observations.
We spent our Writer's Workshop time making a book for Tanner, our Star of The Week. As we do every week, Ms. Dennehy demonstrated how to best draw Tanner as we looked at him and made observations (such as his green eyes, brown hair, etc). Then, the children used sentence starters to write the pages of his book. We hope you enjoy this special book Tanner!
