We were all apple scientists today! After reading How Do Apples Grow, The Kindergarteners were so excited to touch , dig and taste apples today! In small groups, the children used their science journals and had a chance to explore apples. They did a taste test with Ms. Richlen and many discovered that they really liked yellow apples! We asked them to predict if apples float or sink and many were surprised by their observation that they float. We also cut open apples to reveal the star inside and counted the seeds. The Kindergarten scientists did a great job recording in their journals what they observed. Next week, we will focus on different parts of a tree and begin to learn why leaves change color.
We read The Farm Concert during Reader's Workshop today. As we did when reading Mrs. Wishy Washy, we made predictions based on the pictures before reading. Then, we summarized the book by thinking about the beginning, middle and end of the story. This is a great thing to also do at home when reading with your child:-)
We finished up our math stations this afternoon as we continued to think about the number "5" and decomposing and creating numbers less than 5. Children worked with me on their Counting Jar books while others represented numbers 0-12 in their Counting Books.
We ended the day with Buddies. Our Buddy classroom is Mr. O'Connor's 3rd Grade classroom. With their buddy, the children interviewed each other as they tried to find out what they have in common and what is something they would like to learn more about their buddy. We will have buddies about once a month.
