After a successful ALICE drill , we had a "business as usual" kind of day. During phonics, we turned over the letter Q-Couldn't Quack and brainstormed words that begin with "Q". I also told the Kindergartneners that "Q" is a very shy letter and because of this "Q" and "U" stick together like glue!
During poetry, we learned the poem "Thumbs in The Thumbs Place" and reviewed sight words during this time. The chidlren were also asked to match the mittens on the back of the page and to find the lost mitten! We ended our poetry time by sitting around the fire and singing this new song, along with some favorites.
We spent math in the computer lab where the chidren are becoming more and more familiar with addition and subtraction in all different formats. Seeing an equation such as "9=5+4" is still a bit confusing for them, but something we will continue to work on during the year.
We spent Friday Fun playing games. In small groups (thanks to Third Grade support!), we played the following games: Sorry, Uno, Kids On Stage, Quirkle, and Memory. Our focus was on figuring out who goes first, making an order to play, playing by the rules, and staying focused on the game itself. You can reinforce this at home by playing games- it's a great way to spend a cold, wintery day!
