This week was quite a busy one! We continued our study of rocks as the 2nd Grade geologists experimented with the different types of rocks in water. Our Science Word wall is full of new words to describe the rocks we have been exploring, with the over arching word being properties. The children are working hard to describe their experiences in their science journals.
During Reader's Workshop, we are working to monitor for meaning when reading. We are reviewing the strategies learned in First Grade such as looking for small chunks in larger words to figure out how to read a word and also looking specifically at the first few letters in a word to figure out the unknown word. Next week, we will begin reading groups. Ms. Sontag and Ms. Behr will be also leading reading groups during this time.
The 2nd Graders had their first math assessment today, assessing for understanding of number combinations. After these are corrected, I will send them home (if I have already had your fall conference) or share them with you at your child's conference. We worked with Ms. Lepow this week during math stations where children were encouraged to explain their thinking and to show their work on a number line.
Questions to ask your 2nd Grader:
1. Who is your 4th Grade buddy? What did you do with your buddy?
2. What number is the landmark number we were thinking about for our subtraction and addition equations?
3. What have we noticed Amy Hest's books?
4. What are some properties of river rocks?
5. What game have you enjoyed playing during Morning Meeting?
