The following are some highlights of our week together:
* We are continuing to work on place value during math. This week we reviewed and learned about writing numbers in expanded form. We also used number bonds to represent the amount of hundreds, tens, and ones in each number. We continued to work on counting by "landmark" numbers to get to a target number.
* . During Social Studies, we started our work on Timelines. We defined a timeline as a list of events put into chronological order. The children took the events from my life and put them in order and made a timeline. We will continue to practice this with events from my life next week. The end product of this unit will be for the 2nd Graders to create their own timelines. We will need your help with this! We will send a letter with more information next week.
* . Thank you for writing back to your child in response to their Friday letter. The children were so excited to read your letter and to write back. Please return your child's folder by Wednesday of next week.
* We started guided reading groups during Reader's Workshop this week. While some children read with me, others are either working on a review Fundations activity, using Lexia or continuing their independent reading. This time has been invaluable as I continue to get to know each child as a reader.
* During science, the 2nd Grade geologists used screens to separate a rock mixture into: sand, small gravel, large gravel, small pebbles and large pebbles. Then, the scientists wrote their observations in their journals.
Some questions to ask your child about their week:
1. What book are you reading with Mrs. Wyner and your book group during Reading Workshop?
2. What was a fact you learned about Mrs. Wyner when working on a timeline of her life?
3. How many tens are in the number "807"?
4. What did you use to sort rocks during science?
5. What is a suffix? What suffix is used when doing a comparison? (est, er)
