We started our morning with our weekend share and then worked in our Weekend journals. Our mini lesson focused on using the strategies taught last week to draw realistic people in their entries They did a fabulous job with this goal. We then had three children share their journals and we had a chance to compliment each child specifically on their journal writing/ drawing.
We also started our Handwriting Without Tears Handwriting program today. We began with the song- "Where do You Start Your Letter? At the Top?" to reinforce that we start all letters at the top.The children did a "wet, dry, try" with black boards to practice writing the letters E and F. They then followed up with a practice sheet for both E and F. Our goal is to have the children start their letters at the top and to describe their strokes as a "big line" and a "little line".
We started new math stations today! At the Exploration Station, children were sorting buttons, while at the Lesson Station children were sorting dominoes by counting the "pips" or dots on each domino. At the review station, Kindergarteners were representing the numbers 1-10, while others were playing Go Fish with Domino cards.
We ended our day with Open Circle where we defined Double D behavior. A "Double D" is when a behavior is Dangerous or Destructive and it is at these times when a child should tell a teacher. Behavior that is not a "Double D" is annoying and we will be discussing ways to handle annoying behavior. Try give your child 2 scenarios (for example, destroying one's sand castle and if a child goes in front of you in line) and see if they can differentiate between an annoying behavior and a Double D.
