Wow! The Kindergarteners were so excited to start making their fairy and troll houses today! Thank you to everyone for bringing in materials- we will be continuing these tomorrow and Wednesday, so your child is welcome to bring in more materials over the next couple of days. The Kindergarteners worked inside and outside planning and then trying to make beds, umbrellas and chairs for the fairy houses. There was collaboration between children a lot of "thinking out loud" which was fabulous to hear! We look forward to continuing our work on these tomorrow.
During Writer's Workshop, we talked about the importance of thinking before writing or drawing. Many children take a pencil/marker/crayon before really knowing what they are going to write/draw in their journal. We also talked about a sentence and figured out how many words were in each sentence that the children wanted to write. We encouarged each child to try and write at least one word.
We started new math stations today. At the lesson station, we focused on counting on more or less. I hid cubes under a bowl and then added one more or took one away. The children were asked how they knew how many were under the bowl. At the review station children used inventory bags to count and then to re-check their math by counting backwards. The Kindergarteners played "Top It' at the game station, while others explored attribute blocks at the Exploration Station.
We finished our day with Open Circle. We read the book No Fits Nelson! by Zachariah Ohara and discussed matching the size of one's reaction to the size of the problem. We explained that a fire is a BIG problem (meaning you have to call the fire department, things could be damaged) while cutting in line is a SMALL problem. We then role-played having small reactions and big reactions. This would be a great discussion to continue at home! :-)
