We started our morning with Colby's dad, Rob, joining us for Mystery Reader! He read 2 fabulous books - Gus The Dinosaur Bus and There Was A Coyote Who Swallowed A Fly - both great books to start our day!
We then transitioned to phonics where we reviewed the letter sounds we have learned so far and then played the game "what doesn't belong?" The Kindergarters were asked to look at 3 pictures and then decide which had a different beginning sound. This activity nicely prepared the children for Writer's Workshop where everyone was able to hear most of the beginning sound of the words that they wanted to write!
During Handwriting, we introduced how to correctly write the letter "H". Then, each child got a handwriting sheet with a detailed guide for writing his/her own name. The children were very excited about this and took a lot of pride to write their own name in the correct way.
During math, Elijah's mom, Robin, joined us a volunteer for math stations! The Kindergarteners worked with me to sort and compare inventory bags, while another group worked with Ms. Dennehy for comparing how much less. The game this week was "making squares" and others explored "clicks" which is a building manipulative we have in our classroom.
We ended the day by reading So Thankful by Mercer Meyer which emphasizes the importance of being thankful for all that we have and not for what we want! It also introduces the concept of being thankful for things that cannot be purchased, and to be appreciative of our families, our time with those we love, and to not be envious of others.
