We started our day with a bus evacuation drill. We boarded the buses and learned about bus safety and expected behavior on the bus. The bus driver pointed out the emergency exits on the bus and then each child had the chance to sit and "slide" out the back of the bus! It was a fun (and different!) way to start our day.
We then had Writer's Workshop. I described a piece of bubble gum having each word on it that we wanted to say. Then, we S-T-R-E-T-C-H the piece of gum to hear the sounds. Even though it was a bit of a gross analogy, it did seem to help the Kindergarteners hear the beginning and ending sounds of many of their words! Thank you ,also, to many of you who e-mailed/wrote notes about your weekend acitiviites. It was very helpful when working with your children.
We introduced how to write the letter N this morning and introduced the word "diagonal". Next week, we will work on the letter M.
We started new math stations where the children used the terms "more and less". The KIndergarteners compared handfuls of items and then were also asked to graph their handful at "Grab, Count, Compare". Others made a fall tree thinking about the terms "part, part, part, whole", while others played the game top-it.
We ended our day with Open Circle. I read the book Beautiful Oops which I have mentioned to many of you at our conferences. The book focuses on the fact that a mistake can be the beginning of something wonderful! I read this book as a way to use the language "beautiful oops" and to have that philosophy be a central component in the way we work in Room 1.
