To begin our day today, the children responded to our morning meeting question about a place (AKA a noun) where they spent time this weekend. This helped to prompt the children for our "think, pair" share" part of meeting and then continued into Writer's Workshop. A student in the class brought up the challenge of not using the word "fun" in our writing which launched us all into a discussion into words that can be used instead of "fun". Again, I was so amazed by the vocabulary of our students and, in fact, did not see the word "fun" being used at all in the children's writing!
We continued our day with phonics where we introduced the sound of a new letter - F- Spinning Fan and brainstormed words which started with the letter F. We also explored the Eric Carle website which can be found at www.ericcarle.com. I promised the Kindergarteners I would let you know about this valuable resource- it's definitely worth checking out!
During math today, we continued using standard (rulers) and non-standard (our own feet, links, and unifix cubes) to measure different objects in the classroom. The students in our class have become experts at making measurements end to end, understanding that one person's foot may measure a different number of feet than another person's (and why) and the importance of accurate measuring. After vacation, we will transitioning to a unit where we will formally introduce addition and subtraction.
