It was great to be back at school and the children were very excited to see each other. We started the day by sharing about our week away. Many students shared about their time with their families and seeing friends. We used this information during Writer's Workshop and also reviewed the steps of writing. We also had a discussion about what children can do while waiting for help during Writer's Workshop time (add to the picture, write more words, add detail)-- see if your child can remember any of of our suggestions!
During Phonics today,we introduced the sound of 2 new letters- X- exiting x, and Z-Zipping Zipper. We also brainstormed words that begin or end with these 2 letters- our lists were quite small!!
For math stations today, we started our unit on addition and subtraction. The Kindergarteners played "Clear the Board" with Ms. Dennehy where they used the plus or minus symbol to determine if they should add or take away tiles from their game board. At the lesson station, we used "story boards" to tell number problems using unifix cubes as our math manipulative. We will formally introduce and use the "+" and "-" symbols next week!
During Open Circle today, we reviewed the problem solving process and brainstormed some problems that we face sometimes in Kindergarten. As a class, we will try and solve these problems by using the traffic light signal.
A quick reminder- as long as it's not too cold , we go outside every day. Please make sure to help your child pack a hat, mittens/gloves, appropriate footwear (boots if necessary) and a warm coat. Also, please label your child's items. Thank you so much!! :-)
