Despite the shorter day today, we still got so much done!! We started our morning with Writer's Workshop where all children are continuing to write independently. We are encouraging the Kindergarteners to think about adding detail when they write. For example, instead of writing , "I went to a birthday party. It was fun", to write "I went to a birthday party at Fun and Games. I liked earning tickets.". This is certainly a challenge, but one we feel that they are up for.
We also started to learn about David today, adding to our Mind File. Tomorrow, we look forward to figuring out David's clues for his Star of The Week mystery bag.
During math today, we started new math stations and started to focus on 3-dimensional shapes. We also talked about what differentiates 2-dimensional shapes from 3-dimensional shapes (2-D shapes are flat, while 3-D shapes are not; we describe 2-D shapes only by length and height; we describe 3-D shapes by length, height, and width). At the game station, students used "offices" to describe directions to a friend for a shape array and would lift the "office" to see if the shape arrays were the same. Others used shape stencils to explore and create! We will continue these stations tomorrow.
During Open Circle, we introduced the term "mindfulness" and the Kindergarteners listened as I led them through a relaxation exercise. After this 3 minute activity, children said that they felt like "they are in a different place", they felt "relaxed" and "calm". See if your child can describe this activity to you.
