The Kindergarteners "wrote" in their Weekend journals for the first time today! After sharing what they did over the weekend(which was tricky for some..) the children had a chance to write and draw their memory after I modeled what was expected. It was wonderful to see the Kindergarteners using the right colors to depict things such as trees, bikes, and the outdoors. They are looking forward to doing this every Monday!
We also had choice time this morning where the children enjoy working together to create and build- today it was with legos, magnatiles and bristol blocks. Others chose to use play dough while others read or played together with the doll house.
We continued our exploration of numbers during math where children were even more creative at seeing numbers in different ways than they were on Friday! I think our discussion at the end of math helped children to see that 5 popsicle sticks can be made in many different types of configurations. Ask your child to show you the number 6 in as many ways as he/she can using coins! I'll be curious what they share.. -)
We read the book Arnie and His School Tools which led us to a discussion about children using tools in the classroom which help them learn. Tools could be a fidget tool, a rocking char, a standing or even a piece of gum. A tool helps us learn like tools help a construction worker do his job. We discussed the fact that if a tool becomes a toy, it is no longer effective and a teacher will try and figure out a better tool for a student to use.
