During Reader's Workshop today, our stamina increased to 3 minutes! The Kindergarteners were very proud of this accomplishment. During this time, the children sustained silence and independence as they looked at books, and even attempted to read words and sounds that looked familiar. Our goal for the year will be to get to 10-15 minutes of quiet reading during this time when Ms. Dennehy and I can also meet with small guided reading groups.
During Fundations, we reviewed sentence structure and introduced the concept of syllables. We broke down the syllables in words such as "gingerbread", "baseball", and some of the children's names in our class. We reviewed the fact that sentences are made up of words, words are made up of letters, sounds , and syllables. These are hard concepts which we will continue to reinforce and work with throughout the year.
Our poem today was "The Pledge of Allegiance" The Kindergarteners were asked to cut and glue pictures that correlated to the big phrases in the pledge. We hope that this will be helpful as we recite the Pledge each morning.
We spent our math time in the computer lab using Symphony Math. As we do every Thursday, the Kindergarterners work quite independently during this time as they are matched to their own level. After a brief lesson together where we talked through strategies to solve the problems presented (such as how to figure out the next number in a sequence or the number before), the children work at their own pace for about 20 minutes.
