We continued to discuss Martlin Luther King today and the way that being a leader is not always easy. To demonstrate this, I told the class that the teachers had decided that only the children wearing boots could have snack today. Those children stood up, while others were quite upset (and confused..). It took only a few second and one child did say, "But, Mrs. Wyner , that's not fair!". I did ask the children who were going to have snack how they felt about this...In a matter of minutes, I told the class that ,of course everyone would have snack, but how did this make them all feel? We likened the situation to MLK and I think the children truly understood the importance for standing up for what you believe in, even if it seems like a tough thing to do. I would love to know if any of your children talk about this at home.
Ms. Pirelli joined our class today and we talked about flexible vs. inflexible thinking. She demonstrated these concepts by using a "hard brain" (inflexible thoughts) and a "molded jell-o brain" (flexible thoughts). We role played and showed how things are much easier with a flexible brain! We were also introduced to "Superflex"- a superhero who is inside all of us and helps us to be flexbile. We will continue to learn about Superflex in the months to come.
We also went to an obstacle course today created by Mr. O'Connor. We had a chance to do this as a reward to the school for earning 100 PRIDE bucket tickets. The class had a a lot of fun up in the gym!
Finally, we had math choice to end our day. Some children chose to make silohuette pictures (thinking about shapes and symmetry) while others built with straws, K-Nex, and MagnaTiles. Others chose to complete a roll and record activity and others worked on ten-frame snowmen. Ask your child what activity he/she chose to do during this time.
