Today the Kindergarteners participated in a "role-play" that they didn't even know they were a part of! Before snack, I told the Kindergarteners that only the children who had shoelaces could have snack today. All the children who had shoelaces happily got up and lined up. The children on the rug were quite upset. Slowly, one child in line (who had shoe laces) walked back to the rug and said "if my friends can't all have snack then I"m not going to have snack". I kept quiet and let the children figure things out and do something. More and more children started to speak up saying that this was unfair. After about 5 minutes, I brought the whole group together ensuring them that they could all have snack!! When I asked why they think I did this activity, they slowly figured out the connection to MLK. We had a great discussion, with Ms. Pirelli at my side, talking about how it felt to speak up (some felt nervous or embarrassed) and how this relates to the way that many people, led by MLK, stood up for what they believed and things changed. It was a very powerful exercise.
We also had completed our Literacy Stations today and learned how to write capital "G" and H" during Fundations.
During science, we brainstormed names for our fish! The names will be revealed tomorrow. We also added a tunnel to their tank and observed their behavior. As always, the Kindergarten scientists then recorded their observations in their journals.
