We had a fabulous discussion about Martin Luther King this morning, refering back to yesterday's Open Circle about positive leaders. The Kindergarteners shared what they knew about Martin Luther King. I then told them about the laws that existed not so long ago which treated people with black skin very differently than people with white skin. We read the biography Martin Luther King, Jr. and learned more about life when MLK was growing up and how he helped to change the laws. The children were very interested in learning more and we will be focusing on this important man for the next few weeks. Please let me know if any points of discussion come up at home.
We also had new Literacy Centers this week. I began small guided reading groups where children are reading at their just right level (for many this is "level A/B"). I introduced the strategy of eagle eye. Eagle Eye reminds us to look at the pictures to figure out unknown words. We will continue these centers tomorrow.
We also continued our math stations today, continuing to focus on addition and subtration. Feel free to practice this at home with simple word problems, such as "We have 4 marbles. If we get 2 more, how many will we have all together. Would we use plus to show this problem or minus?"
