We started "Shares" today. The children who shared today did a great job speaking in front of the group in a clear way to explain what they brought in to share with the class. Likewise, children also did a good job asking questions that were relevant and related to the share. We look forward to children sharing tomorrow as well.
During Open Circle, I showed the class where the "amygdala" and "frontal lobe" are located in their brains. I explained how the amygdala is responsible for the thoughts and feelings we have, while the frontal lobe helps us to make decisions and to organize our thoughts. I explained that when our amygdala needs to work hard (because we are having big emotions and feelings), it's harder for our frontal lobe to work well. We therefore talked about strategies to help us become more calm and able to access self-soothing strategies when we are feeling upset. The Kindergarteners seemed to really like this science connection.
We also started talking about Thanksgiving! During Writer's Workshop, the children created a turkey with leaves about all for which they are thankful. This project required a lot of organization , thoughtfulness, and an ability to practice their best guess spelling- we were so proud of all the children for their hard work on this project! We will be hanging these up for all to see in our classroom :-)
We ended our day with Vivian's mom joining us as Mystery Reader- thank you for spending part of your afternoon with us! :-)
