The day started with an agenda-packed school meeting. Nan Li came to talk to Loker School about Wayland's Chinese New Year Celebration on January 30th at the High School. I've been to this event before and it's truly phenomenal! I highly recommend it... The fifth graders also presented a short skit about Martin Luther King and then the whole school sang a beautiful song about peace and love with Ms. Jacobson.
After school meeting and PE, we finished the math stations that we started yesterday. Your child should now be familiar with the subtraction symbol and be able to tell a simple story using the words "take away" or "subtract". We will continue practicing these concepts throughout the rest of the year. We also read the book If You Were a Plus Sign as an introduction to math today.
We finished our day by starting to make a map of our hearts. Over the next few weeks, we will begin the process of writing (4-page) books just like the authors we have studied! We discussed the fact that authors write about things, people, and places that are close to their hearts and I modeled what is close to my heart. The Kindergarteners loved this task and we will continue working on our maps of our hearts over the next few days. We will then use these "maps: as a springboard for writing. Ask your child what he/she put on his/her map!
